Top 10 Mistakes to Avoid When You’ve Moving

When it’s time to move, you’ll want to start by finding the best moving company around. But even with the best Cypress moving company in town, you could make some mistakes during the moving process. Here are the top ten mistakes that customers make, and how you can avoid them:

1. Not starting early enough.

It’s easy to let the moving process drop to the bottom of your to-do list when you’re already dealing with selling your home or renting a new apartment. But don’t leave planning the moving process until the last moment, or you’ll regret it. Start planning your move as soon as you know you’re going to move, and you can avoid many of these other mistakes.

2. Not vetting the moving company.

As you’re getting ready for your move, the first thing to do is to properly vet Cypress movers to ensure you choose the right moving company for your needs. At the very least, you’ll want to ensure your movers are licensed and insured. But you’ll also want to check customer reviews, and get quotes to ensure that you get the best services for your needs.

3. Not examining the contract.

The contract, or bill of lading, between you and the moving company is an important document. You’ll need to be sure that you’re getting all the services you need, but not paying for services you don’t need. Look through the contract closely to ensure you know what you’re signing up for, and how much you’ll pay.

4. Not taking advantage of free resources.

When you’re one a tight moving budget, take advantage of any free resources you have available. For instance, if you’re doing a DIY pack, you can get boxes from your friends and family members who have recently moved. Even used newspapers can be a great option for packing fragile items.

5. Packing boxes too heavily.

Some Cypress moving companies will put a limit on the weight allowed when you’re packing boxes. When you pack boxes too heavily, they’re difficult to pick up and more likely to break during the moving process. Using the right size box for each type of material you pack will help. Extra heavy items may be better off in their own box or just unboxed and packed into the moving van.

6. Not measuring for your furniture.

As you’re moving, it’s easy to assume that all your furniture will fit easily into your new home. But if the rooms are shaped differently, this may not be the case. Measure your new home, and then lay out your furniture on graph paper or an online program. Any furniture that won’t fit should be sold or donated before your move. This will save you both hassle and money on your moving expenses.

7. Not labeling boxes.

Whether your Cypress movers are packing for you, or you’re packing on your own, be sure your boxes are labeled appropriately. At minimum, the boxes should be marked heavy or fragile as appropriate. You’ll find unpacking easier if you label boxes with the room that the items inside go into, and with the contents of the box.

8. Not amending your address.

It’s easy to forget to change your address with the Post Office before you move. But they need at least a week or two’s notice to get your mail going to your new address at the right time. So be sure to get online and update your address as soon as you have a new address. This will save you hassle down the road.

9. Tossing away receipts.

In some situations, you can deduct moving-related expenses from your federal income taxes. Be sure to keep your receipts just in case this is an option for you. If you are able to deduct these expenses, be sure to keep your receipts for the next five to seven years, according to IRS rules.

10. Packing inappropriate items.

Even the best Cypress moving companies have restrictions on items they cannot move. Federal restrictions, for instance, keep movers from handling potentially hazardous materials like propane tanks and lawn chemicals. Don’t count on your movers to handle these items for you. Instead, ask for a list of items your movers won’t handle, and then make other arrangements for getting those items to your new home.
